Toy Librarian Needed


We are looking for a Toy Librarian!

It''s a paid job part-time for 4 hours a week with a 1 year contract, renewable.

Our toy library is run by a group of four committee members and we are looking to employ a librarian to do the opening every Tuesday 10:30 am - 12:00 pm and Saturday 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm.

We are looking for someone passionate, reliable, and detail-oriented who is willing to come in each session to be a caring custodian for our 300+ toys. This person will be an essential part of our wonderful community of parents, children, and volunteers.

The ideal candidate will be:

  • Passionate about children, and knowledgeable about child development – including which types of toys are best suited to different children at different ages and stages of development.
  • Detail-oriented and comfortable reviewing and updating our online system on the computer.


Your tasks will include:

  • Cleaning the Toy Library before and after opening sessions and be sure everything is in the right place.
  • Open the library at the designated time and put the sign out.
  • Receive toy returns and check for cleanliness, lost pieces and damages.
  • Process returned toys and Issue toys to members and update MiBaseNZ system.
  • Charge rental fees, fines and membership charges as appropriate.
  • Sign up new members, explain terms & conditions etc of the Toy Library
  • Keep toys looking “appealing” on display in the library.
  • Making sure toys are well documented: Updating labels/database, labeling new toys, and following up with parents on missing pieces.
  • Reviewing our toy selection and making recommendations for new toys based on experience. This will include speaking with parents, reviewing our database to identify which toys are more or less popular, reviewing our range of toys compared to the ages/stages of our member children, and making recommendations for toys that we should be buying each year.


Skill required:

  • Basic computer skills, Microsoft Office, email, internet
  • Good socializing skills


Skill desirable:

  • Knowledge of MiBaseNZ system,
  • Previous experience in a similar position,
  • Knowledge of Toy Library life.

The candidate will be required to come to each Committee meeting on a volunteer basis and prepare a monthly report. The template will be provided.
